The Altar Guild prepares the church for worship and cares for all the items used in worship, from the sacred vessels and candlesticks, to the linens and hangings which change seasonally or to accommodate such events as weddings and baptisms. They prepare everything for celebrations of the Eucharist, and oversee the decoration of the church for special occasions, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter. The Altar Guild works to make our church a place of meditation, peace, and joy for all.
The Altar Guild welcomes new members, including both women and men. Please contact Terri Greenwell via the office, if you are interested in serving on the Altar Guild.
The Episcopal Church uses a common cup (chalice) for the wine in the Holy Eucharist. Chalice bearers assist at Communion by coming after the Priest, who has the bread, and offering the wine to each person at the altar and saying “The Blood of Christ. The Cup of Salvation” or similar words. It is also important for people to know that one may receive in only one kind, receiving only the bread.
Training is required to perform this ministry. If interested, please contact the Rector.
The St. James’ Choir brings joy to our ‘ohana!
Our music draws on the 1982 Hymnal, classical, jazz, gospel, choral, and contemporary Christian music from various sources, and we welcome suggestions from the congregation for service music.
If you are looking for a place to serve and/or belong, give the St. James’ Choir a try. Our choir director, Rona Lee, has a beautiful spirit and great passion in making sure all who volunteer their voices and musical talents feel welcome and included.
If you would like to sing, or if you play an instrument or dance the hula, contact Everett or Rona via the office. They will be glad to talk with you!
Reading Scripture—also known as serving as a Lay Reader or Lector—is a gift to the worshipping community. This includes reading with clarity, expression, and having a personal commitment to the value of reading God’s word aloud. Readers have an essential role in the liturgy and must be dependable.
Please contact the Rev. Marnie Keator if you would like to serve as a Lector.
Ushers greet everyone when they arrive at the church and help create a welcoming atmosphere! Ushers also make sure that everyone has what they need for worship, including a bulletin and a seat that works for them. Ushers collect the offering and help parishioners come up for Communion. They are essential for making sure that everyone feels welcome and comfortable in church.
Please contact the Rector if you are interested in serving as an usher.
